raucous enthusiasm made for an interesting back-to-back, especially with the latter's giant rubber duck thrown into consideration. After them, Powerwolf's German power metal and Alestorm's. People are conflicted on the former, but what's rock and roll without a bit of contentious spirit? Die Antwoord have made a career out of less (and less talent, objectively speaking) and there's no denying Wargasm's power.

And as for Kiss? It's good fun, but it's right that this was the last time.īoth Wargasm and Spiritbox stood out on Sunday despite their relative novice status on these grounds, but Download is a hell of a proving ground for such impressively talented bands. Electric Wizard may be something of a meme now, but their Dogtooth stage headline set was a thing of teeth-rattling beauty. Balancing infectious, melodic punk music with unmatchable crowd banter, crowd-walking, a call to improve the rock industry for women and minority groups and an emotional Facetime with his mother, Carter is a titan and his band are incredibly tight. The antidote to that came in quick succession thanks to Airbourne's lashings of Aussie spirit (though no stage climbing for frontman Joel O'Keeffe this time out), and the the standouts of the day - and probably the entire event - Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes. Slightly later, Skindred and A Day to Remember had the main stage crow in the palm of their hands, offering a far more energetic experience than Lacuna Coil on the Opus, after an as-always-immaculate set by Myles Kennedy.
Wayward Sons opened the Apex (Main) stage, confidently sprinkled their blend of classic rock over the eager audience, followed by Theory and metalcore vets Bury Tomorrow, who have swallowed the loss of frontman Jason Cameron with casual accomplishment. With the shock of only the slightest of rainfalls just about fading, the arena opened on Friday, heralding the start of the weekend's performances after some rousing pre-event shows in the village on Wednesday and Thursday.
